Yamei Kin, born in Ningbo, Zhejiang province in 1864, was the first overseas female student in China. 

Jin followed her adopted father to Japan and studied there in 1869. In 1881, she was enrolled by the New York Hospital Affiliated Girls' University of Medicine, to become China’s first overseas female student and, four years later, its first graduate.
