Metallurgic Industry
Zhejiang Province had a total of 1,289 large-scale metallurgical enterprises with a total asset of RMB 89 billion and workforce of 148,000 at the end of 2005. Zhejiang currently enjoys a steel making capacity of 8.5 million tons, an iron making capacity of 4 million tons, a rolled steel manufacturing capacity of 10 million tons, a smelting capacity of 450,000 tons of ten types of nonferrous metals and a processing capacity of 2.4 million tons of nonferrous metals. Year 2005 has witnessed total sales revenues of RMB 134.3 billion and total profits of RMB 3.665 billion of this industry. In 2005, Zhejiang generated a total output of 4.32 million tons of steels, 7.17 million tons of steel products, 350,000 tons of ten types of nonferrous metals and 1.75 million tons of processed nonferrous metal products. The whole year also witnessed a total export value of RMB 6.6 billion.
Characteristics of the industry: 1. Steel industry still lags behind but enjoys a huge development potential. Zhejiang's current crude steel manufacturing capacity ranks the 18th in China (as against the 4th in terms of economic output) and only Hangzhou Steel and Iron Group can be deemed as a large-scale steel making enterprise whose steel output accounts for 69.35% of the provincial total. Zhejiang’s steel output is only 30% of its steel consumption. However, Zhejiang enjoys a huge potential in the development of steel industry considering its location along the southeastern coast and its advantages in ports and utilization of foreign resources; 2. Zhejiang’s stainless steel industry enjoys certain advantages in China and Zhejiang is currently one of the key manufacturing bases of stainless steels in China. Ningbo Baoxin Stainless Steel Co., Ltd is one of the key manufacturers of cold rolled stainless steel plates in China; Wenzhou’s seamless stainless steel pipe output accounts for 70% of the national total; Ningbo and Huzhou also boast of many medium and small-scale stainless steel manufacturers; 3. Zhejiang’s nonferrous metal industry ranks the 2nd in China. This industry mainly features processing of nonferrous metals. Output of processed copper products account for over 30% of the national total and has been the highest in China for nine consecutive years; output of processed aluminum products also ranks the 4th in China. In addition, Zhejiang’s secondary metal industry is also leading in China.
Products that enjoy comparative advantages: processed copper products, aluminum products, seamless stainless steel pipes, stainless steel plates and strips, etc.
