An exhibition of farmers' and fishermen's paintings, part of Zhejiang Culture Year in Japan, opened on Aug 29 in the Japanese capital Tokyo.

Among the 60 exhibited paintings, 32 are from Putuo district, Zhoushan city where fishermen paintings enjoy a high reputation. The exhibits are all award-winning works depicting seascapes and fishing life in the island city from different perspectives.

Japanese people have an excellent understanding of the inheritance and charm of Putuo's ocean culture.

Takayuki Matsutani, president of the Association of Japanese Animations, showed great interest in the fishermen paintings and highly appreciated their attractive color combinations and imaginative compositions. A Japanese politician of the Democratic Party of Japan, Shinpei Matsushita, sent his daughter to study the paintings closely.

The fishermen paintings uniquely represent Zhoushan archipelago's culture and have won the city's Putuo district the name of "home of Chinese modern folk painting". These paintings, often exhibited internationally, build cultural bridges between China and other countries.

The exhibition, organized by the Zhejiang culture administration and the China Cultural Center in Tokyo, will come to an end on Sept 8.
