An art troupe from East China's Zhejiang province performed traditional Wuju Opera in the Swiss capital of Bern on Feb 4 as part of the Spring Festival reception held by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Switzerland.
Artists from Zhejiang performed classic Chinese stories such as Legend of the White Snake and True and False Monkey King for the Swiss audience, drawing warm cheers and applause.
Geng Wenbing, the Chinese ambassador to Switzerland, addressed the reception and extended gratitude to performers from China and Switzerland for their efforts in building closer ties between the two countries.
The Wuju Opera Art Troupe, as designated by China's Ministry of Culture and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, began touring in Europe on Feb 4. In the next 10 days, it will take part in China's "Happy Chinese New Year" event in Italy and the 2018 carnival in Malta.
Wuju Opera is a special type of opera local to the city of Jinhua and its neighboring areas in Zhejiang. In 2008, it entered the list of China's national intangible cultural heritages.
The Wuju Opera Art Troupe is very popular among overseas audiences and plays a vital role in the province's international cultural exchanges.
