Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, announced on May 15 that the "City Brain", a cutting-edge project which will enable the city to make operational decisions thanks to next generation technology, will be fully operational by 2022.

The system aims to improve city management, offer more convenience to people and make the city smarter by virtue of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing. It will provide residents with easy access to the city's data about real-time traffic, parking lots and doctor appointments.

The project has been piloted in parts of the city since 2016, and is in collaboration with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group and Taiwan company Foxconn.

The piloting of the project has shown the smart system to be quite useful in improving traffic efficiency, due to its analysis of traffic flow and detection of traffic incidents.

In the future, the "City Brain" system is expected to become more efficient and comprehensive in expediting the city's sustainable development, especially in the fields of transportation, public securities, medical care, environment, tourism, and administrative services, according to Zheng Rongxin, director of Hangzhou Economic and Information Commission.
