An exhibition in the US of rare examples of celadon – the distinctive Chinese porcelain with a translucent, pale green glaze -- from Longquan, in Zhejiang province opened to the public on June 9.

It took place at the Forbes House Museum in the east coast city of Boston, as part of the annual Boston Dragon Boat Festival.

The Longquan celadon  is a renowned style of green-glazed porcelain made in Longquan and neighboring areas of Zhejiang province. It was listed among the rare Masterpieces of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009 and over the centuries has been widely applied to daily necessities such as bowls, salvers, cups, pots and bottles.

A total of 80 pieces of contemporary Longquan celadons went on display from June 9 to 14 in Boston. It is the second time that Longquan has showcased its distinctive celadon culture in the United States, after an exhibition at the UN headquarters in New York last September.

Chen Aiming, chairman of the Longquan Celadon Association and also a master in the art, said the exhibition in Boston will be a springboard for Longquan celadons to be appreciated by more people in the world.

Chen, along with other five craftsmen from Longquan, demonstrated their techniques for crafting celadons at the exhibition, giving locals the opportunity to take a close look at the traditional Chinese artform.
