The words "I love you China, I bless you, my charming Hangzhou I'm proud of you....", accompanied by the Hangzhou anthem, marked the start of the 2019 Hangzhou Global Qipao Festival at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France on June 19.
Traditionally made of silk and featuring intricate embroidered patterns, qipao, or cheongsam is the classic dress for Chinese women, combining the elaborate elegance of Chinese tradition with unique stylistic elements.
The event, which was held in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, is Hangzhou's attempt to showcase its unique charm and rich culture, especially silk and qipao culture, to the world.
Consisting of three parts – French choir singing, a dance performance and a qipao show – the Paris event was the first stop of the festival's global tour.
The Zumba dance performance, led by French dancing troupe "Zumba Alix", will be published on YouTube and short video app TikTok to encourage overseas women to wear the qipao and deepen cultural exchange.
Launched by the city government of Hangzhou in 2017, the event will also be staged in other European cities, including Prague, Vienna, London and Italy.
