Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province – known for its prosperous private sector – is mulling a daring plan for the comprehensive development of its industry to be driven by the internet of things, according to a top official of the city.

Chen Weijun, Party chief of Wenzhou, said that with the arrival of the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, the city is working to usher in the IoT era by virtue of its strengths in the intelligent electricity and sensor industries.

Chen made his remarks at the opening ceremony for the Conference on Internet of Things for Industry and Energy in Wenzhou, Zhejiang on Sept 10.

"Wenzhou is building itself into a pilot city for China's smart city construction and 5G applications," Chen said, "Now, there are 13 cloud computing centers, over 500 5G base stations and more than 10,000 narrow-band IoT bases in the city."

Chen added that information and data on 37,000 local companies had been included on cloud platforms, which would lead to high efficiency in data sharing. He pledged the city would speed up getting a competitive edge in a bid to create more opportunities.
