Editor's note: Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in January, Zhejiang province has been making vigorous efforts to fight it. This special series will take a close look at the measures the province has taken during the epidemic.

Hundreds of thousands of grassroots officials, community workers, and volunteers have made remarkable contributions to epidemic control in Zhejiang province.

They worked tirelessly to check residents' information, patrol communities, spread information about how to prevent the disease, and send life supplies for residents under quarantine.

Jiangshan, a county-level city in Quzhou, recorded audio with local dialects to keep villagers updated on the latest news about the epidemic.

Local officials at Jiatong village, Qiaodun town, Cangnan county, Wenzhou, drove their own cars to patrol the village and supervise those under home quarantine.

The village is located on a mountain and has a population of 2,806. More than 1,000 people work elsewhere and return only during the Spring Festival.

Chen Erzhong, Party chief of the village, led another seven local officials and 30 volunteers to examine returned residents. Five residents returning from Hubei province were kept under home quarantine.

Village officials worked in shifts to monitor residents day and night. Chen even parked his car in front of their homes and stayed there to keep watch over them.

"The temperature on the mountain is at least 3 degrees lower than in the town and there is frost at night, so we cannot stay in a tent," said Chen.

Several other officials followed Chen’s example. Wu Hailong, Party chief of Qiaodun town, promoted the practice in other mountainous villages.

"This practice not only keeps out the cold, but also make it easier to purchase goods for those under quarantine," said Wu.

Li Xuejun, Party chief of Qingfeng Community in Haishu district, Ningbo, has worked with nine community workers over the past months to gather information on 4,470 households and take the temperatures of those under quarantine twice a day.

Li also created a group on WeChat for residents under quarantine to console them and refute rumors.

Encouraged by Li, many Party members volunteered to help and many residents bought face masks and made soup to thank them.

"Controlling the epidemic in communities is a systematic project that requires the coordinated efforts of all members rather than relying on community workers alone," said Wu Xingzhi, deputy director of the public management research department of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Party School.
