The Zhejiang Red Cross Society held a ceremony in honor of 10 body donors at the Hangzhou Qianjiang Cemetery on Dec 6.
The 10 donors donated their bodies and organs to patients experiencing organ failure or blindness, as well as to institutions for medical education purposes.
Since 2010, 1,563 people in Zhejiang have donated their organs, 722 their bodies, 1,442 their ocular tissues, and 124 their brain tissue. They have saved the lives of nearly 5,000 people with failing organs and restored the eyesight of more than 2,800 people.
During the ceremony, the 10 donors were presented with garland, and twenty students from the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University took a solemn oath.
Li Zhijun, 32, thanked the organ donors on behalf of the beneficiaries.
The Hangzhou Qianjiang Cemetery offered nearly 1,230 square meters of land for free to bury the body donors. The new cemetery, which opened on Dec 6, was specifically designed to honor body donors.
Officials of the Zhejiang Red Cross Society said that they plan to hold ceremonies at the cemetery every Qingming Festival to honor the donors.
