Zhejiang authorities recently published a 15-year plan to construct a network of green pedestrian lanes across the province.

The total length of such lanes is expected to surpass 30,000 kilometers by 2035.

The new plan also sets phased construction targets for the lanes: to add 5,000 km by 2022 and 20,000 km by 2025.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period, Zhejiang's green pedestrian lanes grew by more than 10,000 kilometers in length. The lanes pass through some of the province's best destinations for sightseeing, relaxation, and cultural tourism.

The network of green pedestrian lanes will be so dense that every Zhejiang resident will be able to walk to one in less than ten minutes and bike to one in less than five minutes, an official in charge of formulating the plan said.

The tree varieties to be planted in the green belt along the lanes will be well-suited to the local environment and easy to maintain, as required by the plan. Pavement materials for the lanes must be eco-friendly and economical.
