Shaoxing Museum was established in 1992 and officially opened to the public in 1993. The current building covers an area of 9,533 square meters, inspired by a model of a Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) house unearthed in Shaoxing.

Over the past 30 years, Shaoxing Museum has developed into the most influential comprehensive museum in Shaoxing, integrating cultural relics collection, scientific protection, academic research, exhibitions, social education, cultural exchange, and leisure tourism.

Shaoxing Museum currently houses over 37,000 items in its collection, including 1,674 precious cultural relics of third grade or above. These items are rich in Shaoxing regional characteristics and hold historical, artistic, and scientific value.

The collection is rich and diverse, with a complete system, including particularly precious items such as Neolithic stone axes, ceramics and swords from the Shang Dynasty (c.16th century-11th century BC) to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), bronze mirrors, and paintings and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

The permanent exhibition on Shaoxing's historical culture follows the development of Shaoxing's history, with key historical periods as nodes, divided into six sections. The exhibition includes over 1,100 exquisite cultural relics, systematically displaying Shaoxing's profound historical and cultural heritage, forming a three-dimensional general history of Shaoxing.
