Xie Shucheng, a native of Quzhou in Zhejiang province and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was included on the 2023 list of Geochemistry Fellows released by the Geochemical Society and European Association of Geochemistry for his outstanding contributions to the field of biogeochemistry.

Geochemistry Fellows is an honor established in 1996 by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry to recognize outstanding scientists worldwide who have made outstanding contributions to the field of geochemistry.

This year, 17 scholars from different countries around the world, including Academician Xie Shucheng, were included on the list.

Xie, born in 1967 in Longyou county, Quzhou, has been engaged in geobiology research for a long time and is committed to promoting the integration of the earth and life sciences.

Xie is very fond of his alma mater Quzhou No 2 High School. Every time he returns to his hometown, he returns to the school to visit his head teacher, Pan Zhiqiang.

Xie said that the main way in which Quzhou No 2 High School helped him was by giving him a solid foundation in English that benefited him throughout his life. Mr Pan often used his vacation time to practice listening and English grammar with his students.

"East and west, home is the best," Xie said, quoting a sentence taught by Mr Pan in the early 1980s, which inspired him to return from the UK to China after finishing his study.
