Quzhou illustrator wins 'Golden Monkey King' Award

Ye Luying, an illustrator from Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, was awarded the gold prize for the general awards - comics at the 19th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival (CICAF) "Golden Monkey Award" ceremony held in Hangzhou on June 20.

The text of the award-winning work - picture book of Mulan - comes from a folk song in the Northern Dynasties (386-581) and is a well-known story.

Ye believes that in the historical depiction of women in China, Mulan is unique. In addition, this story shows the personal growth trajectory of a girl, which can resonate with many people. The audience can grow up with Mulan.

Those familiar verses are all vividly depicted on paper through Ye's brushwork and rich imagination.

This was not Ye's first time winning the Golden Monkey Award; her picture book Luoshen Fu won the gold prize for the general awards - comics at the 15th CICAF, as well as the gold prize of the Best Illustration Award at the 13th China Animation & Comic Competition Golden Dragon Award.

Ye's new picture book Qianli Jiangshan Tu (A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains) will be released in July.
