Quzhou leads the way in affordable childcare services
Quzhou in Zhejiang province has made significant strides in providing affordable childcare services since incorporating the construction of new comprehensive childcare service centers into the government's key public welfare projects in 2023.
One exemplary institution is the Douding Childcare Center in Qujiang district, which offers childcare services to children from the surrounding community, ranging in age from a few months to three or four years old.
"We have a dedicated curriculum development team that creates a language-rich environment and engaging activities for the children. We foster good behavioral habits and assist parents in supporting their children's growth," said Wang Lihua, a representative of the center.
Lin Songmao, speaking about his granddaughter's experience at the center, shared, "Her parents need to go to work, and both her grandmother and I are very busy, so we decided to send her here. The environment and teachers are excellent, making us feel very reassured”.
To date, the city has disbursed a total of 2.91 million yuan (401,458.67) in enrollment and operational subsidies to 1,453 families and 63 childcare service institutions, which offer personalized care options such as full-day care, half-day care, hourly care, and temporary care.
Quzhou currently boasts 265 registered childcare service institutions, providing a total of 9,947 childcare slots. Among these, 237 are inclusive institutions, accounting for 93.15 percent of the total childcare slots. This ensures that residents have access to nearby, satisfactory, and reliable childcare services.
Furthermore, the age range for childcare is continuously extending downward to include younger children. "The Qujiang Comprehensive Childcare Service Center has already established an infant class that can accept babies as young as six months old," said Wang.
Wang added that this development means that after maternity leave ends, mothers can send their children to the childcare center, where they will receive specialized and professional care, addressing the gaps in infant and toddler care.
