The Changshan Geopark, located in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, garnered attention at the 9th International Congress on Palaeontological Heritage, which is taking place in Morocco from Sept 24 to 28.

Professor Carlos Neto de Carvalho, scientific coordinator of the Naturtejo Geopark that is a UNESCO Global Geopark in Portugal, delivered a keynote speech on Sept 24, praising the achievements of Changshan Geopark in geological conservation and highlighting its wealth of intangible cultural heritage.

The park, located in Changshan county in Quzhou, is rich in geological and paleontological significance.

Changshan officially began its application for the UNESCO Global Geopark status at the start of 2023. To promote its elevation, it collaborated with institutions like the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In July, UNESCO evaluators conducted a comprehensive assessment of Changshan Geopark, commending its achievements in the protection of geological heritage, scientific research, education, and community engagement.

In September, the UNESCO Global Geopark Council unanimously approved Changshan's application, recognizing its efforts in resource protection and sustainable development.

The International Congress on Palaeontological Heritage focuses on the conservation, management, and development of paleontological heritage, bringing together experts to discuss the protection and utilization of global ancient biological relics.
