Malaysian buyer Adam recently visited the Kaluga caviar production center in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, where he was impressed by its digital farming system, 15-minute sterile processing, and the quality of the caviar it produces.

The Zhejiang Agricultural Code on the packaging, which integrates traceability information from growth to sales, particularly caught his attention.

Kaluga is a famous Chinese caviar brand owned by Sturgeon Technology, which has a base in Quzhou.

Kaluga, one of the largest global caviar suppliers, exports to over 40 countries and regions. In 2024, its production reached 260 metric tons, 35 percent of global output.

Through collaboration with government departments and companies, the "Quzhou Sturgeon Codes Platform" was launched on the Zhejiang Agricultural Code digital platform.

Each tin of Kaluga caviar now has a unique "digital ID". Consumers can scan the code to access comprehensive information on the process from breeding to processing, and verify authenticity via the Zhejiang Food Chain platform.

The digital traceability system has gained recognition from bulk buyers and serves as an anti-counterfeit certificate in retail. During this year's Singles Day shopping festival, Kaluga's e-commerce sales more than doubled compared to last year, while its total domestic retail sales increased by 10 percent this year.

"The traceability codes have helped to increase trust among consumers and boosted sales," said Zhan Shili, deputy general manager of Quzhou Sturgeon Aquatic Food Technology.
