The per capita disposable income of low-income residents in Yiwu in the first three quarters is expected to reach 15,484 yuan ($2,318), a year-on-year rise of 17.4 percent, according to statistics recently released by the municipal bureau of agriculture and rural affairs.
All families in the county-level city now have a per capita disposable income at or above the poverty line of 10,800 yuan.
Since the start of this year, Yiwu has been implementing targeted policies to help low-income residents alleviate poverty. Task forces have been organized to visit low-income families and formulate custom poverty-alleviation solutions for them.
Officials said the poverty line in Yiwu has grown from 7,680 yuan in 2015 to 10,800 yuan in 2020, an increase of 40.6 percent.
A survey conducted by the Yiwu authorities at the beginning of this year showed that nine households (14 residents) registered annual per capita disposable income below 10,800 yuan. With help from the local government, all 14 residents have now shed poverty.
Yiwu also launched a campaign to renovate and rebuild dilapidated houses for low-income residents and launched programs to offering them medical aid.
Yiwu offered 3.33 million yuan in subsidies to help with schooling for children from low-income families. So far, no student subject to the nine-year compulsory education has been reported to have dropped out.
In a bid to reduce poverty, villages in Yiwu have been mobilized to increase their collective business revenues. By the end of September, 415 villages in Yiwu recorded more than 200,000 yuan in annual business income, accounting for 94 percent of the total number of villages in Yiwu.
