Consumption booms in Yiwu in Lunar New Year
Statistics show that major commercial complexes in Yiwu, Zhejiang province received 2.08 million visits and generated a turnover of 170 million yuan ($26.3 million) from Feb 11 to 26, the first fortnight in the Year of the Ox on China's lunar calendar.
The aforementioned foot traffic and turnover were respectively 1.8 times and 3.2 times of those figures over the same period in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic year of 2019.
The five large supermarkets in downtown Yiwu received 479,000 visits and generated a turnover of 45.49 million yuan during this period, respectively rising by 92.7 percent and 15.7 percent from the previous year.
The city's accumulated number of people attending movie cinemas throughout the fortnight was 510,000, a record high. Cinemas received as many as 98,000 people on Feb 12, the first day of the Year of the Ox.
During the Spring Festival holiday, which ran from Feb 11 to 17, the city's major tourist destinations received 420,000 visits, up 250 percent from 2019.
A total of 382,800 non-local workers, more than 80 percent of whom were born and raised outside of Zhejiang province, opted to stay in the city during the holiday and accordingly gained the 500 yuan shopping voucher gifted by local authorities as an incentive for them to do so. As much as 88 percent of such vouchers, worth 168 million yuan, have been used and have induced 490 million yuan spent in shopping.
