Yiwu's truck driver speaks English
In recent days, a video about a truck driver from Yiwu, a county-level city in Jinhua, showcasing his proficiency of spoken English has gone viral in China.
The truck driver, who described himself as a high school graduate who knows a little English, is seen speaking fluently in the video.
"I can handle physical labor when I'm young, but how about when I become old?" said the driver, explaining why he insists on learning English between busy work hours.
In addition to English, he is also learning French and other languages.
The truck driver is named Chen Hailong and comes from Jiangxi province. Born in 1992, Chen has worked in Yiwu, Jinhua since graduating from high school and has worked as a truck driver for five years.
Chen noted that the high school education laid a foundation for his English and he has benefited much from being proficient in the language. He explained that as Yiwu is an international city, it is inevitable to encounter expat clients, and this compelled Chen to improve his English so that he can communicate with them.
Chen also teaches his colleagues simple and commonly used English words during breaks and volunteers to serve as a translator for them.
Chen can also speak some French. "Some of my foreign clients speak French and it's not enough for me just to be able to speak English," Chen added.
