A China Telecom outlet near Xiuhu Lake in Yiwu, Zhejiang province powered a commercial live stream in which an anchor promoted consumer products on a number of e-commerce platforms simultaneously on May 12 by using the state-of-art FTTR (Fiber To The Room) Wi-Fi service that had just made its Zhejiang debut.

The service, jointly launched by the Yiwu subsidiary of China Telecom and Huawei Technologies, was a response to the national call for promoting 5G and gigabit fiber-optic networks, as well as for expanding internet application scenarios. It is believed to have accelerated digitization reform in the city of Yiwu, which is often dubbed "the world capital of small commodities".

"FTTR Wi-Fi service raised the internet speed by 90 percent and reduced the delay time by at least 30 percent compared with conventional Wi-Fi networks," Yi Xilin, vice-president of Huawei's division for access network equipment, told local media outlets.

Other advantages for fiber-optic networks also include a low price, a strong resistance to corrosion, and a long service life of 30 years, Yi added.

The technology can be widely used in homes, offices, and industrial parks. Hence, it has great market prospects in Yiwu, which boasts a thriving digital economy, said Chen Hao, general manager of the Yiwu subsidiary of China Telecom.

The launch ceremony of the FTTR Wi-Fi service also witnessed the establishment of a demonstration base for FTTR commercial live streaming, the first of its kind in the world, at the China Telecom outlet.

Around 183,300 commercial live streams took place in Yiwu in 2020, generating 20.7 billion yuan ($3.22 billion) in sales, up 10.2 percent year on year, which topped all other county-level regions in the province.
