A group of expats learned how to perform Yueju Opera at the Yiwu Cultural Square Theater on Feb 9, according to local media outlets.

The event, sponsored by the Jimingshan Community in Yiwu, aimed to help expats living in the city better understand traditional Chinese culture and learn through experience.

Led by Li Xiaowen, a top national actress and famous Yueju Opera performer, and teachers from various departments introduced Yueju Opera, including its music, costumes, makeup, and props.

They put on special costumes and learned about throwing water sleeves, which is often done during performances to express emotions.

In the new version of the Yueju Opera The Butterfly Lovers, the image of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai holding folding fans has left a deep impression on people. Expats tried a short "fan dance" with their own folding fans, but the seemingly simple twirling of the fan is not easy to do.

The fan is used as a farewell prop and also symbolizes a butterfly. When two folding fans are put together to form a circle, it represents the stunning transformation of Liang and Zhu into butterflies, evoking romance from centuries ago.

Ali Malhatai Adnan from Finland, who is married to a Yiwu local, said he appreciated the charm of traditional Chinese opera and that "Chinese culture is beautiful."
