The Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday, is celebrated with customs such as eating zongzi, wearing scented sachets, and hanging wormwood. These traditions have spurred a vibrant holiday economy, especially in Yiwu, where festival-themed items like colorful cords, bracelets, and scented sachets are selling briskly.
Domestically, tourist attractions and supermarkets are the main buyers, placing orders from February through June. Internationally, overseas Chinese communities are the primary buyers, focusing on traditional wormwood sachets and colorful cords.
"Dragon Boat Festival sachets have been on shelves since April, and now we're nearing the end of the sales period," said Dai Xiaoli, manager of Jingwei Handicrafts in the Yiwu International Trade Market. She highlighted this year's bestsellers, including traditional wormwood sachets and those with inscriptions like "Exam Victory".
This year has seen a shift from traditional zongzi-shaped sachets to designs featuring pumpkins, money bags, ingots, lotus flowers, and dragon boats, appealing to younger consumers.
Colorful cords are also selling exceptionally well this year. Known to bring peace and good fortune, wearing colorful cords has become a Dragon Boat Festival ritual for many, with over 100,000 cords sold so far.
With booming sales, manufacturers are currently busy fulfilling orders. At Yuxiang Handicrafts, workers are producing 200,000 sachets daily, primarily for domestic tourist attractions and supermarkets. The company's e-commerce platform handles over 7,000 orders per day.
