Zhang Bing, Party secretary of Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, met with Shi Yigong, president of Westlake University and well-known scientist both at home and abroad, on June 29, local media reported.

Zhang extended a warm welcome to Shi and briefed him on the city's economic and social development.

He said that Jiaxing is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region and is the permanent site of the World Internet Conference.

The city now prioritizes integration into the the YRD region and hopes to pave the way for cooperation between Zhejiang and Shanghai, Zhang added.

He noted that Westlake University was established by Shi and other scientists and serves as a gathering ground for various high-caliber professionals.

The Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University in Zhejiang, located in Jiaxing, is the first institute in China co-founded by a university and local government.

Zhang expressed hope that Shi and the university will place more importance on Jiaxing and the research institute and offer more assistance in constructing sci-tech platforms in the city.

Shi thanked Zhang for his warm welcome and gave an overview of Westlake University.

He said that the university is a new-style research university dedicated to introducing the best teachers and cultivating the best students in order to make breakthroughs in original theories and make innovations in core technologies.

Shi noted that the university shares similarities with the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University in Zhejiang, and in the future, it will further cooperation with Jiaxing and the research institute in various fields.
