Jiaxing, a city in East China's Zhejiang province, has made remarkable progress in building a moderately well-off society, local media reported on Oct 29.

Jiaxing boasts strong innovation capabilities, balanced urban and rural development and social resources, an improved natural environment, and an increasingly open economy.

In 2019, the number of high-tech companies in the city exceeded 1,800, and the added value of high-tech manufacturing and emerging industries in Jiaxing saw the most rapid growth in Zhejiang, with 40.3 percent and 9.8 percent year-on-year increases, respectively.

The per capita disposable income of rural residents in Jiaxing stood at 37,000 yuan ($5,500) in 2019, ranking first among cities in Zhejiang for the past 16 years, and the income ratio of urban to rural residents was 1.66, the smallest urban-rural income gap in China.

In addition, the annual recurring income of each village-level collective in the city reached 2.4 million yuan last year.

Old-age insurance for both urban and rural residents is also available throughout Jiaxing, high-quality medical resources were accessible to rural hospitals, and libraries and cultural centers were established in rural areas in 2019.

Jiaxing's concentration of PM2.5 declined from 68 micrograms per cubic meter in 2013 to 27µg per cu m in 2019. It also became the first city in Zhejiang making waste incineration services available around the city.

Last year, the actual utilization of foreign capital in Jiaxing exceeded $38 billion, and 74 Global Fortune 500 companies launched 120 projects in the city.
