Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province saw an improvement in air quality in the first 10 months of this year, local media reported on Nov 18.

The proportion of days with good air quality in the city increased to 86.6 percent in the Jan-Oct period to 264 days, 26 more than last year and exceeding the provincial average.

Jiaxing's annual concentration of PM 2.5 was 26 micrograms per cubic meter during this time, a year-on-year decline of 20.8 percent.

In recent years, Jiaxing has invested 1.37 billion yuan ($208.44 million) in efforts to eliminate unpleasant odors and gas waste, including upgrading kilns used by the glass and steel industries and monitoring construction sites.

A list of heavy volatile organic compound dischargers was also compiled by the city, and companies on the list will be regularly inspected by local law-enforcement departments.

Thus far, the city has completed renovations on 14 industrial parks and 176 factories.

It has also established air monitoring stations in all 74 of its towns and sub-districts to enhance citywide air monitoring through data analysis and radar scanning.

Moreover, the city has established a team of odor inspectors to encourage local residents to work to eliminate unpleasant odors and force companies to treat exhaust gases more strictly.
