Jiaxing renovates 140 old residential communities

The prefecture-level city of Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province completed the renovation of 140 old residential communities last year, local media reported on March 2.

The residential communities cover a total built-up area of 3.11 million square meters and contain 34,000 households which house nearly 110,000 residents.

Of these, 88 are located in the downtown area with a built-up area of nearly 1.49 million sq m and 17,000 households, housing nearly 54,000 residents.

"The walls, roofs, windows and burglary resistant windows of our community have been revamped and more parking spaces, vegetation, fitness facilities have been made available," said a resident surnamed Zhang, who has lived in the Wenyunli Community in Jiaxing's Nanhu district for more than 20 years.

Fang Qiang, executive deputy director of the office in charge of renovating the old residential communities in Nanhu, said the renovation program has been one of the Jiaxing municipal government's major tasks to improve its local residents' quality of life and their standard of living.

He noted that in 2020, the municipal government allocated 300 million yuan ($46.38 million) to Nanhu's residential renovation program.

Jiaxing has also rolled out measures to equip old residential communities with an elevators and upgrade the secondary water supply facilities of its high-rise residential buildings.

According to Wei Dong, director of the economic construction department of the Jiaxing municipal finance bureau, the city has received a total of 140 million yuan in subsidies from the central and provincial government to renovate and improve old residential communities.

Wei said that during the current year, Jiaxing's municipal finance bureau would redouble its efforts to guarantee sufficient capital for the renovation projects.
