Jinyun root carving is a folk art created by sculptors using roots as the material. After the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, Jinyun's root carvings mostly depicted Buddha, legendary birds and animals, and practical crafts.

In the 1980s, some local sculptors made full use of the resource advantages in Jinyun's mountainous areas. They advocated the cohesion of manmade things and nature, and pursued the philosophy of "coming from nature and return to nature". On the basis of inheriting traditional root carving skills, they integrated the aesthetic tastes of modern plastic arts, and formed unique Jinyun root carving.
