Lishui city in East China's Zhejiang province is continuing along its path to growing ever greener, with the launch of an urban design competition that will help shape the way it looks and functions – and inspire others to pursue the same course of action, according to local officials.

Lishui is the pilot city for the province's moves to seek economic growth in a green way, placing greater emphasis on environmental protection and ecological development.

Local officials said that Lishui has assumed the responsibility of exploring the construction of a contemporary Shanshui -- literally, mountains and waters -- city.

The city launched a competition, called "Future Shanshui City • Dwellings in the Lishui Mountains", in May this year.

It set the goal of methodically constructing a Shanshui city spatial framework – in order to set a model image for the city typography, create a new Shanshui city lifestyle and explore contemporary, sustainable urban planning strategies.

Since the launch of the competition, the organizers have received a raft of proposals from home and abroad and the shortlist has been confirmed.

In order to encourage those who could not make to the shortlist, the organizers subsequently set up the "Creative Future ShanShui City Proposal Awards" on Sept 7.

Officials said the shortlist for those awards will be determined by the public.
