The 13th Lishui Rural Culture and Arts Festival kicked off in Suichang county in Lishui city in East China's Zhejiang province on Nov 5, local media reported.

City officials said the festival is an effective springboard for promoting the arts in rural areas and for promoting the integrated development of culture, agriculture and tourism in Lishui.

They said this year's festival has a whole host of activities including a painting and calligraphy competition, a photography competition and a singing competition.

"It is a lively literary and artistic activity and also a rare opportunity for learning and exchanges," said Li Peng, who attended the festival for the first time.

"I love calligraphy very much. I also have my own calligraphy studio, which is focused on training teenagers," he said.

"I hope that through this festival, awareness about the art of calligraphy can spread further to the countryside and enrich the spiritual lives of rural people."
