These days it's all smiles for Zhang Junjie, who returned after his army discharge to Songyang county in Lishui city, East China's Zhejiang province, to sell agricultural products, because business is flourishing after his hookup with livestreaming platform Douyin, known as TikTok internationally.

His Douyin account, which focuses on selling Lishui's agricultural products including honey, sweet potatoes and rice, has attracted more than 2.5 million followers to date.

In recent years, a large number of young people like Zhang have emerged in Lishui, focusing on  selling agricultural products via livestreaming.

According to third-party data monitoring platform Feigua, business is booming. As of Nov 12 the number of videos with the keyword "Lishui Shangen" – a regional public agricultural product brand created by the city's municipal authorities – on Douyin had reached 135 million.

The overall sales of Lishui Shangen products this year increased by 9 percent year-on-year and  products sold through online platforms climbed to 15 percent of total sales.

In June this year, Lishui established the Lishui Livestreaming Academy to teach local farmers how to make commercial videos on Douyin. By the end of October, more than 800 farmers had been trained.

"I registered a Douyin account a year ago, but I only had hundreds of followers. Since taking the training course, I've gained 100,000 followers in two months," said Zeng Ni, owner of a homestay facility in Jinyun county.

She said that by relying on Douyin, her monthly revenue is now 10,000 yuan ($1,529) more than before.
