Global presence of Longquan celadon grows via digitalization

An online exhibition of Longquan celadon, a type of green glazed pottery produced in Longquan, Zhejiang province, caught the eyes of nearly 880,000 overseas viewers during the Spring Festival, local media reported.

As part of the "2021 Happy Chinese New Year" program, which comprises of a series of cultural activities sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism around the world during the traditional Chinese festival, the exhibition has gone online in 45 countries and regions so far, reaching thousands of overseas people despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Longquan celadon, one of the earliest globalized goods in China, was quite popular all over the world from the 12th to the 15th century. Celadon products made in Longquan were exported to other countries and regions along the ancient Silk Road at that time.

Now, this kind of art has regained popularity through the use of digital technologies and the organization of a number of activities to showcase its charm worldwide.

Longquan plans to establish a database of celadon materials for overseas exhibitions in the future, as well as strengthen cooperation with national art institutions and overseas organizations to better promote the art to the world.

"Longquan celadon has been a good example of how fine Chinese culture can go global," said an official with the publicity department of the county-level city in Lishui, Zhejiang.
