Locals were delighted when 18 Castanopsis sclerophylla trees that are 150 to 350 years old – in Zhakou village in Songyang county in East China's Zhejiang province – recently came into full bloom.
Castanopsis sclerophylla is an important species of evergreen, broad-leaved tree in subtropical areas and reputedly has a high environmental and economic value.
Its branches and leaves are highly resistant to toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, while its fruit can be used as both food and medicine.
