Ye Jingfen, a 25-year-old blind woman from Longquan city – administered by Lishui city in East China's Zhejiang province – was recently admitted to the School of Special Education of Beijing Union University, to undertake a master's degree in traditional Chinese medicine.
At the start of this year, she took the postgraduate entrance examination and scored 396 points – 97 points higher than the national passing score – to become the only blind student in Zhejiang to qualify.
Ye suffers from congenital retinitis pigmentosa and has been studying at a blind school since childhood. In 2016, she became a student of acupuncture and a tuina massage major at Changchun University.
It is not easy for ordinary people to take postgraduate entrance exams, let alone blind people. Ye reportedly worked much harder than anyone else.
When writing in braille – the tactile writing system for the visually impaired – the braille paper needs to be fixed to a braille board and then the corresponding points are marked with a braille pen. During the preparations for the exam, Ye Jingfen almost wore out her alloy braille pen.
"I want to be a doctor so that people will call me Doctor Ye, instead of blind girl or blind technician," Ye said.
