The Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China recently unveiled a new initiative – designed to be a model that becomes a trailblazer – to advance the development of the green economy across China.

The ministry issued the Notice on the Agreement to Pilot the Ecology-Oriented Development Model – with a total of 36 projects from 20 provinces and provincial-level cities selected to participate in the EOD pilot project.

The Xianxia Lake basin EOD model pilot project from Suichang county – administered by Lishui city in East China's Zhejiang province – was included in the national project.

Last September, the ministry solicited alternative projects under the EOD model from various regions. Based on its ecological and environment management of the local Xianxia Lake, Suichang put forward its project.

The pilot area of the project covers the Xianxia Lake basin, involving 11 towns in Suichang, with the core area located in Hushan town.

The implementation period of the project is 2021-23. The plan defines the objectives and content of the pilot work, as well as nine support projects in the categories of ecological and environmental governance and green industry development, involving a total capital of 4.43 billion yuan ($688.67 million).

It is expected that by 2025, a sustainable and healthy development trend for the green environment, green economy – as well as the harmonious coexistence between man and nature – will have basically been established in the area.
