As of Aug 10, over 60,000 restaurants in East China's Zhejiang province had joined the "sunlight kitchens" program, a business model in which their kitchens are installed with surveillance cameras and are made visible to consumers on the two takeaway ordering apps, Ele.me and Meituan.

The "sunlight kitchens" program was launched by the Zhejiang Administration for Market Regulation on July 6.

On July 22, Zhejiang authorities officially approved regulation that decrees that all of the province's dining businesses that provide online food takeaway services must gradually make real-time video documentation of their food processing available on third-party platforms. As a result, more than 6,000 restaurants joined the "sunlight kitchens" program the next day.

More than 200,000 restaurants are running online food takeaway services in Zhejiang.

The Zhejiang Administration for Market Regulation noted that some participants of the "sunlight kitchens" program sometimes deliberately cover or even suspend the surveillance cameras during business hours. In light of this, the authorities will add corresponding punishment clauses to the regulation rules.
