The Yuyue Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop – located in the Liandu district of Lishui city, in East China's Zhejiang province – welcomed a group of students recently.

The workshop is located on the premises of Lishui Yuyue Brewing Food Co Ltd. The visitors gained firsthand experience of traditional brewing techniques by making their own sweet wine, soy sauce and vinegar.

As part of its efforts to better preserve and pass on intangible cultural heritage, the workshop combines heritage with tourism, creating a vibrant experience-based place, according to Chen Xudong, who runs the company.

In addition to Yuyue Brewing, Lishui currently boasts eight provincial-level intangible cultural heritage workshops – including workshops for Longquan celadon, Yunhe wooden toys, Suichang rice dumplings and Jingning Huiming Tea.

Intangible cultural heritage workshops are located at business entities and industrial production and processing sites. They rely on representative intangible cultural heritage projects or traditional handicrafts to protect and pass on heritage and promote local employment.

Since 2022, Lishui – as the only pilot city in the province for intangible cultural heritage assistance for common prosperity – has been vigorously developing its intangible cultural heritage projects to benefit the local economy and employment.

To date, 30 municipal intangible heritage workshops in Lishui have created an output value of 1.01 billion yuan ($148.5 million) and provided 11,630 jobs.
