The most eye-catching sight on the streets these days in Songyang county – in Lishui city, in East China's Zhejiang province – is not the cornucopia of red maple leaves or even the yellow gingko trees.

Instead, it's the Koelreuteria paniculates – commonly called the golden rain trees.

Before autumn, the golden rain trees were hidden among other green trees, inconspicuous and unnoticed. But after a whole spring and summer of dormancy, they finally brought out the highlight of the year.

The golden rain trees have a long flowering period. In summer, the tops of the tree crowns bloom with golden and delicate flowers, shining brightly under the scorching sun. After September, some flowers form red fruit, hanging like red or purple lanterns on the treetops.

Some flowers have not fallen yet and they form a contrast with the green leaves and the red fruit. The trees are interspersed with goose yellow, green and pink and from a distance, they look a little like a light veil of sunset.
