Xianshishangwei qipao workshop in Liandu district of Lishui, Zhejiang province, now sells its qipao — a traditional style of Chinese dress — to the United States, Singapore and beyond.
On the production line, workers skillfully cut, sew and press the garments with precision.
Zhang Jiamin, founder of Xianshishangwei, said that overseas orders, once mainly handled through resellers, are now becoming a major growth driver. Since joining Taobao's cross-border e-commerce program, the brand has seen steady monthly sales increases abroad.
Currently, international customers are primarily overseas Chinese and cultural enthusiasts who wear the qipao for weddings, celebrations and cultural performances.
As part of the fabrication process, a group of women gather in a common prosperity workshop to craft intricate pankou — traditional Chinese knot buttons — in Shuangxi village of Yaxi town in Liandu district. This is one of the most delicate steps in qipao production.
This year alone, the workshop has generated over 60,000 yuan ($8,428) in additional income for these local women.
Zhang Jiamin plans to further expand the overseas business, blending traditional aesthetics with international trends to reach more customers and increase villagers' earnings.
The town will promote the common prosperity workshop model, providing skills training and resources to help more residents benefit from cultural exports and economic growth.
