Construction was completed on the Dongming Tunnel along the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou high-speed railway on July 27, according to local media reports.

The Dongming Tunnel runs from Qiaoli village, Sanjiang community, Shengzhou to Hanfei village, Chengnan township, Xinchang county. Both Shengzhou and Xinchang are administered by Shaoxing, Zhejiang province.

The tunnel, 18.226 kilometers in length, is by far the longest among any rail tunnel in East China. Construction on the tunnel started in December 2017.

The tunnel passes through hilly areas fraught with fault ruptures, making construction difficult. However, geological and engineering difficulties have been overcome by the project's contractor, China Railway 18th Bureau Group.

The Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou high-speed railway, which connects the three cities in Zhejiang, is still under construction and is expected to begin operating in 2021. The railway is 271 kilometers long and is designed to support speeds of up to 350 km per hour.
