United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently wrote a letter to participants of the World Young Scientist Summit (WYSS), an annual event held in the city of Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province.
The 2020 WYSS, which concluded in October, was attended by around 800 distinguished guests from over 200 countries either in person or through internet platforms, of whom 75 percent were young scientists under 45 years old. Among the attendees were nearly 20 Nobel Prize or Wolf Prize winners and 170 academicians of sciences.
This year's summit focused on international issues such as poverty alleviation, the environment, health, youth, the future, innovation, and education, as well as the role of technology in countering the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a signed letter, Guterres wrote:"The declaration adopted by the World Young Scientist Summit is an important expression of support for the role of science in advancing human well-being and overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic."
The summit was organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Zhejiang provincial government.
Guterres' letter is a resounding recognition of the achievements made by the WYSS, a CAST official said.
