Sun Huakai was born in the city of Wenzhou, in East China's Zhejiang province, in 1955. In 1958, Sun's father went abroad to Brazil to make a living and stayed there. In 1966, Sun Huakai went to Brazil to join his father after his mother's death. He finished middle school by studying part-time and subsequently graduated from university in Rio de Janeiro in 1980.
In 1992, Sun founded Brazil China Investment Trade Import and Export Corporation. The company's bearing business was once the largest in Brazil and his energy-saving lamp business once had an 80 percent market share in supermarkets in Rio de Janeiro.
Sun led his family to open more than 20 trading companies in Brazil, in such fields as imported toys, clothing, crafts, department stores, automobile tires and household appliances. In 2002, Sun returned to Wenzhou and invested in building the Wenzhou Atlantic Shopping Center.
