Located on the east bank of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia with an area of 1,439 square kilometers and a population of 5.35 million as of 2018.

Consisting of 44 islands and built around the Neva River, St. Petersburg has over 580 bridges. Due to its intricate web of canals, it is often called the "Venice of the North".

With a history of over 300 years, the city is home to many western-European style buildings, including the world renowned Winter Palace.

As the second largest traffic hub in Russia, it is home to 12 railways and is the largest seaport in Russia.

The major industries of St. Petersburg include shipbuilding, chemical engineering, heavy machinery, precision instruments, and radio equipment. Light industry, especially food, has vast potential for development.
