Since going viral online with a video of a shuffle dance they invented, the "Xiaoying couple" of 45-year-old Peng Xiaoying and her husband Fan Deduo have used their popularity to help sell agricultural products like corn and yams from Mayu town in Ruian, Wenzhou by livestreaming.
Through livestreaming, the couple can sell up to three to four kilograms of brown sugar a day for three sugar factories nearby, as well as three to eight kg of corn for local farmers a day.
For instance, they sold more than 70 kg of brown sugar in 2020, generating more than 1.7 million yuan ($260,000) in additional income for local farmers.
However, the couple admits that they couldn't have predicted being livestreaming sales stars. Their initial dance video, in which the couple was dressed in old-time clothes and was showing off their unique dance steps to old-time music, was just made in a happy moment.
"We were then told and taught to use our online fame to sell agricultural products, which we thought would be really helpful to our town," said the couple.
They turned to their son-in-law for technical help and began their journey in livestreaming sales.
As news that the couple were doing livestreaming sales spread through the town, many local residents came to them for help to sell their homemade brown sugar, corn, and yams.
"A single thread cannot be spun into a knot and a single tree cannot create a forest, so I hope that everyone can benefit and live a good life with our efforts," said Peng.
