This year's Chongyang or Double Ninth Festival, a traditional day to honor and respect elders, fell on Oct 14. After climbing Yandang Mountain – in Wenzhou city, in East China's Zhejiang province – and tasting delicious local festival cakes, foreign media anchor Sumayyah, from the island nation of Mauritius, realized just how much she adored the region. She savored the customs of the Double Ninth Festival, while enjoying the glorious scenery of Yandang Mountain.
During the filming, Zheng Xiaohong, a representative inheritor and a master of rice sculptures – a handicraft from Wenzhou – made an exquisite Deng Gao cake, a traditional delicacy eaten during celebrations for the Double Ninth Festival. While climbing the mountain, she explained the origins and customs of the Double Ninth Festival to Sumayyah.
Sumayysh said that every Chinese traditional festival surprised her. For example, the mountain climbing during the Double Ninth Festival this time made her marvel at the grandness of Yandang Mountain. After she posted photos of the mountain peak on her WeChat account and overseas social media platforms, lots of her friends gave them their thumb-ups. "Many foreign friends living in China tell me that they would like to come to Wenzhou and visit Yandang Mountain," she said. "They've even asked me to be their guide."
