Lin Haifan, a Wenzhou-born American stem cell biologist, was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Nov 18.

It was the third membership Lin has gained after he was admitted by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as the US National Academy of Sciences in 2018.

Born in Wenzhou's Tongtou district in 1962, Lin finished his K-12 education in his hometown. He then received his bachelor's degree from Fudan University in 1982 and his PhD degree from Cornell University in the United States in 1990.

By making key contributions to stem cell studies, Lin has won more than 30 awards and honorary titles over the past few decades, which include the Pioneer Award issued by the US National Institute of Health in 2010 and the Research Award of the Society for the Study of Reproduction in 2015, the first time that the award was presented to a Chinese-American scientist since it was established in 1978.

Lin is currently the Eugene Higgins Professor of Cell Biology (tenured), a professor of Genetics, of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, and of Dermatology at Yale University. He is also the founding director of the Yale Stem Cell Center, which has evolved from being just two labs to currently one of the largest stem cell research organizations in the world with 100 member labs.
