Xu Weichun, a Wenzhou native and president of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce in Greece, received a letter of thanks from the organizing committee of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games on March 13.
The letter was for the chamber of commerce as well as various overseas Chinese groups in Greece.
"As the only official event of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games outside China, the flame gathering and handover ceremony was of great significance," the letter stated. "Under the leadership of Chairman Xu Weichun, your chamber of commerce and all overseas Chinese groups in Greece have helped prepare for the event and contributed to our cooperation with the Greek side."
Xu said members from his chamber have played a leading role in preparation work as they served at the flame handover ceremonies of the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
"We told the organizing committee details about the previous two ceremonies we have attended, marked roads that might encounter unexpected situations, invited our friends in Greece to join the security team, and worked with the security team to improve the final plan, ensuring that there will be no unforeseen incidents during the ceremony," Xu said.
"The letter has brought our Beijing Winter Olympics trip to a successful end. We can see that as our country grows stronger, we will be more respected overseas," Xu added.
