Wenzhou, a coastal city in East China's Zhejiang province, is speeding up its development into a youth-friendly city, local media outlets reported.

"Wenzhou's future success depends on more young people working and starting businesses in the city," said Zhu Kang, an expert in social studies. "We should first offer more attractive employment opportunities to young people and create an open and relaxed entrepreneurial environment, a vibrant cultural climate, and more space for educational and career advancement."

In 2004, Li Xiaokun, the principal of Wenzhou Medical University, was a young man studying gene engineering expression technology. He was invited by Qu Jia, the former principal of Wenzhou Medical College, and decided to come to Wenzhou.

Li has since then taken root with his "gene technology" and made numerous scientific achievements. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019, becoming the first academician to be cultivated in Wenzhou.

Many young people also voiced their opinions on helping Wenzhou improve its overall environment, including Huang Chengpu, a class of 2017 alumnus of Wenzhou Business College who currently runs an automation technology company in the city.

He expressed hope that Wenzhou's support policies for young entrepreneurs would be more precise and offer wider coverage, and that the amount and types of subsidies would be further increased.

"I hope that an atmosphere that encourages young people to explore, innovate and start businesses can be fostered in Wenzhou," Huang said.
