Xue Zhengli, a Yueqing native who has been living in the Netherlands for 30 years and is currently serving president of the European Association of Culture and Education, recently served as vice-chairman of the organizing committee of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Netherlands.
"It was my honor to co-host and take part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Dutch diplomatic ties," Xue said.
Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands Tan Jian, Minister-Counselor Cai Renjun, head of the Consular Office Ye Rui, and representatives from all walks of life attended the ceremony and sang the song of Sino-Dutch friendship together.
Xue has been playing an active role in promoting economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries over the past several decades.
He set up a Chinese language school in the 1990s and encouraged local overseas Chinese children to learn Chinese in order to better understand China. Due to Xue's dedication, the school has grown from just several dozen students to more than 10 classes. Many students have benefited from learning Chinese at the school, and even some Dutch students studied Chinese there.
Xue has also been working with the Wenzhou government since 1998 to invite children of overseas Wenzhou natives in the Netherlands to attend summer camps and visit their hometown, a coastal city in East China's Zhejiang province.
