Pingyang Huangtang Tea, developed in Wenzhou's Pingtang town, was recently designated a Chinese quality product of climate and ecology by the Chinese Meteorological Society.
Experts invited by the Chinese Meteorological Society assessed the ecological and climatic conditions of Pingyang town, including the planting environment and climate of Pingyang Huangtang tea.
According to the results, Pingyang town has a suitable climate and environment for the development of agricultural products, such as good air quality, water quality, and vegetation ecology. Pingyang Huangtang Tea is rich in tea polyphenols, which is suitable for amino acids and caffeine.
Wenzhou has a long history of producing tea. The cultivation and trade of Wenzhou tea has flourished since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Pingyang Huangtang Tea, famous for its thick, sweet, and rich but not bitter taste, has stood out in many tea competitions in recent years.
Pingyang town is now home to about 3,233.33 hectares of tea gardens. In 2021, the total output of tea in Pingyang exceeded 570 metric tons, bringing the comprehensive output value of 350 million yuan ($52.13 million). Among them, 165 tons of Pingyang Huangtang Tea with a comprehensive output value of 220 million yuan is expected to bring in money for 15,000 low-income farmers.
